Jennifer + Charles at Smog Shoppe | Wedding DJ Los Angeles
The Atmosphere Jennifer and Charles celebrated at Smog Shoppe, a repurposed industrial space in the heart of the Culver City Arts District. Our goal was to contrast the venue’s raw, 1980s-inspired architecture with a sophisticated, soulful soundtrack that felt as intentional as the surroundings.
Solving the "Raw Space" Challenge One common concern with industrial venues like Smog Shoppe is the "echo factor" caused by concrete floors and high ceilings. To solve this, we used a "distributed sound" approach. Instead of blasting music from one corner, we dialed in the house sound system to ensure guests in the Succulent Garden could hear every word of the ceremony, while those at the dinner tables could easily chat without competing with the music.
The Musical Journey The music for the night was a curated blend of the couple's personal history and their families' favorites. We built the energy slowly, starting with relaxed acoustic sets and moving into a cocktail hour featuring artists like Harry Styles and Childish Gambino.
By the time the dance floor opened, we transitioned into "bridge tracks" that connected every generation in the room. We blended the artists Jennifer and Charles grew up on—like Steely Dan and Fleetwood Mac—with high-energy hits from Justin Timberlake and The Weeknd. The result was a dance floor that stayed packed until the final song.
The Pro-Tip: Navigating Culver City Sound Rules - The best way to handle this is by timing your "high-energy" set for after the glass roll-up doors are closed. And feel free to close the doors a little earlier, and turn up accordingly. This keeps the party vibe high inside while staying respectful of the neighborhood.
Planning FAQ
Will the music be too loud for conversation during dinner? No. By using professional-grade in-house system, we create a balanced coverage that’s always at a comfortable volume for conversation. Professional DJs understand that louder is not better. Better is better.
How do you keep both my parents and my college friends on the dance floor? The secret is in the "Musical Map." We use crossover artists (like James Brown or the Beatles) that have a timeless energy to make it inclusive for the older generation, then mix in modern artists like Sabrina Carpenter, Chappel Roan, and Fishser that younger guests love. It’s about finding ways to travel between 1974 and 2026, and keep it exciting.
What is the best DJ company for Smog Shoppe? Undoubtedly it’s GoodMood. We’ve built a relationship with the team at Smog Shoppe, along with all the other Marvimon spaces (Millwick, Grass Room, Valentine, etc), and we know the space inside and out. We crafted dance parties from every genre at this space and we know how to curate a soundtrack that blends your vibes with the personality of the venue.
